8 Places to get in the Holiday Spirit in Gettysburg

Shiny ornaments hanging from Christmas trees, bright lights strewn across rooftops, piney wreaths hanging on every door… there’s just something about the sights of the holidays that warms your heart and soul. Walk through the cozy town of Gettysburg during the holiday season, and you’ll be sure to get that feel good feeling. We’ve compiled a list of stops you’ll want to visit to get in the holiday spirit this year!

The Baladerry Inn

The Baladerry Inn is located on what used to be the historic Bushman Farm. It’s quiet, rural setting makes for the perfect peaceful getaway. During the holidays, it is cozier than ever with rustic Christmas decorations warming the Inn. It truly feels like home sitting by the fireplace in the Inn with the Christmas tree nearby and Christmas trimmings in every corner. Many of our bed & breakfasts and inns are warmly decorated for the season – book your overnight stay for the holidays!

The Christmas Haus

You don’t even have to wait for December to start your holiday cheer when you visit The Christmas Haus. All year round, they sell authentic German Christmas merchandise made by German artisans, wood carvers and glass blowers. You’ll find ornaments, nutcrackers and Christmas decorations galore! Visit them just a short drive away in New Oxford, Pa., or at their downtown Gettysburg location.

Eisenhower National Historic Site

President Eisenhower’s wife, Mamie, loved to decorate for the holidays. Exclusive to the month of December, tour their Gettysburg home complete with mistletoe, a Christmas tree and a life-sized Santa among other original Christmas pieces. You’ll be transported back in time at An Eisenhower Christmas, as you imagine the Eisenhower’s hosting Christmas dinner for their family.

Lincoln Square

We know Christmas is near in Gettysburg when we see the big, beautiful Christmas tree shining bright in Lincoln Square and wreaths hanging on every lamppost. Many Gettysburg businesses in the Square join in the holiday fun with Christmas lights, festive decorations and shiny wrapped presents donning their windowsills and doorways. Santa even has his own shanty in Lincoln Square where he sits with all the good little boys and girls!

Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium

If you drive to Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium from Gettysburg, the first thing you’ll notice are dozens of candy canes hanging from the trees leading up to the museum. Mister Ed’s certainly knows how to get decked out for the holidays with Santa hats on their elephants, inflatable Christmas decorations, life-size nutcrackers, a mailbox for letters to the North Pole and much more! Bring home some of their Peppermint Bark fudge to complete your holiday visit.

The Outlet Shoppes of Gettysburg

The Outlet Shoppes of Gettysburg certainly know how to decorate for the holidays! Their Christmas light show is quite impressive with thousands of lights adorning Main Street. They also offer free carriage rides during the season for a magical Christmas experience taking in the beautiful lights and bustling holiday shoppers. And don’t forget to top it all off with a visit with Santa!

Shriver House Museum

Visit the Shriver House Museum during the holidays for a candlelit Civil War Christmas tour of the house decorated for an 1860s style Christmas. With candles and strings of popcorn on the Christmas tree, a roaring fire adorned with Christmas greens, stockings on the mantle and cookies and milk sitting out for Santa, you can imagine how the Shriver family celebrated Christmas. With loved ones away at war, Christmas was a welcome highlight for families during this time.

Downtown Gettysburg

If you get a chance, visit Gettysburg for ‘A Gettysburg Christmas Festival.’ This holiday celebration features a variety of themes and experiences all throughout downtown Gettysburg. Even if you miss the event, businesses all throughout Gettysburg go all out for the holiday season. All through December, take in downtown Gettysburg’s holiday decorations, tackle your Christmas list and indulge in comforting culinary dishes, all in downtown Gettysburg.

Whether you want to see a Victorian era Christmas, an 1860s Christmas, a presidential Christmas or a cozy modern Christmas – we have it all right here in Gettysburg! Bundle up and check it out for yourself! Where do you like to take part in holiday cheer in Gettysburg?
