Experience Gettysburg’s battlefield like never before

Gettysburg Battlefield Marathon offers a chance to run through history

Runners will have the chance to experience Gettysburg National Military Park in a new way by participating in the first ever Gettysburg Battlefield Marathon, Sunday, Nov. 6.

Hosted by the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County and the Gettysburg Foundation, the marathon will provide an unprecedented opportunity to run through Gettysburg’s history, with most of the 26.2-mile route taking place in Gettysburg National Military Park. Runners will traverse Gettysburg’s hallowed grounds and pass landmarks including the Pennsylvania Memorial, Virginia Memorial, Eternal Light Peace Memorial, Little Round Top, Sachs Covered Bridge and the Eisenhower National Historic Site.

“Runners in this marathon will experience Gettysburg’s history like never before,” said Norris Flowers, President of Destination Gettysburg. “They will race on the same grounds that troops marched on during the Battle of Gettysburg, the very grounds that President Abraham Lincoln passed on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address. It will be an awe-inspiring event.”

Registration for the Gettysburg Battlefield Marathon is open now and limited to the first 1,000 runners. Register at The fee is $110 through June 30 and $135 beginning July 1. Registration includes a long-sleeve tech shirt, entrance to the pre-race pasta dinner, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, from 5-8 p.m. at the Gettysburg Area Rec Park and two tickets to visit Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

Adams County, Pa. is quickly becoming a top “racecation” destination; a getaway for runners that blends a racing event with sight-seeing and relaxation. In addition to being the home to several races throughout the year and an abundance of running trails, Adams County offers rich history and a multitude of cultural, recreational and culinary experiences.

“In addition to experiencing Gettysburg’s history though the battlefield marathon, we invite runners to expand their trip in order to discover all that Adams County has to offer,” Flowers said. “From one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops in Gettysburg’s downtown, to orchards and roadside farm markets in the countryside, Adams County is home to a wealth of experiences to make an unforgettable weekend getaway.”

Other races held in Gettysburg each year include The American Odyssey Relay (April), a 200-mile relay-style run that starts in Gettysburg and ends in Washington, D.C.; The Gettysburg North-South Marathon and 10 Miler (April), a race that pits ‘North runners’ vs. ‘South runners’; and the Spirit of Gettysburg 5k race (June), hosted by the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County.
