Don't miss the last chance this summer to visit the George Spangler Farm Civil War Field Hospital this weekend! It's a great discovery and a must see for families!
The 136th NYSV Medical Hospital will be onsite to help you discover the stories of the soldiers, surgeons and civilians of Gettysburg–just minutes from the battlefield. Based in Charlotte, NC, the 136th portrays a regimental field hospital demonstrating surgeries, nursing techniques and duties, such as the use of mannequins and period instruments. A special feature of this presentation is a chance to see Dr. Hovey’s actual surgeon kit, still intact, after 155 years that was actually used at the Spangler Farm!
A special program, “Civil War Apothecary: What and How Medicines were used during the Civil War” will also be held on Saturday, August 11 at 12:30pm in the lower level of the barn.
The site is open in summer on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only through August 12. Access is via shuttle from the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Shuttle tickets (Adults $6/Youth $2) are available at the ticket counter or by calling 877-874-2478.
