Dedication Event

The 151st Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Ceremony and wreath laying at the Soldiers' National Cemetery, featuring historian Kent Masterson Brown, Jim Getty portraying Abraham Lincoln, and a Naturalization Ceremony. Program begins at 10am at the rostrum.

November 19, the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address and the Dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery, was formally designated as Dedication Day, by a joint resolution of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, on November 19, 1946. This annual event features a wreath laying, keynote speaker and is sponsored by the Lincoln Fellowship of PA, Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg College, and the Gettysburg Foundation.

Kent Masterson Brown is author of the biography of Lt. Alonzo Cushing, a West Point graduate who died in the Battle of Gettysburg at the age of 22, and soon to be recipient of a Medal of Honor 151 years later.   Brown has authored several books on Gettysburg, was the first Chairman of the Gettysburg National Military Park Advisory Commission, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Gettysburg Foundation.

At 10:00am, the day’s events will begin with the Dedication Day Program at the rostrum in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Soldiers’ National Monument.   This year 50 members of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier will be participating in the program. Lincoln portrayer James Getty will recite the Gettysburg Address and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will hold a naturalization ceremony for sixteen citizen candidates.

Since 1938 the Lincoln Fellowship has been commemorating November 19th in Gettysburg.   In 1946 it was officially declared Dedication Day by a joint resolution from the Senate and the House of Representatives, recommending that the “address be read throughout the United States and its possessions, on our ships at sea and wherever the American flag flies.”  Past speakers include Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Tom Ridge, John Hope Franklin, Shelby Foote, Adlai Stevenson, Carl Sandburg, Colin Powell, Jack Kemp, Stephan Lang, Richard Dreyfuss, Sam Donaldson, Sandra Day O’Connor, Ken Burns, Tom Brokaw, and Steven Spielberg.

This event is free and open to the general public.  A limited number of seats will be available to the general public, so feel free to bring lawn chairs. We also recommend visitors park at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center in Lot #3 and take the free Gold Line Shuttle to the Cemetery. The Gold Line will operate from 8am-6:30pm.
