Yes we have a famous battlefield to tour by car, bicycle, horseback, and even on foot but we boast a wealth of activities beyond those historic acres.
From historic taverns to ethnic cuisine, farm-to-table dining to unique edibles, the tastes of Gettysburg are sure to please every palate.
With adventures to suit every budget, Gettysburg and Adams County businesses offer plenty of packages to help visitors create their dream vacations.
Bring your bike or rent one while you are here. A great way to see the battlefield is on a bike. Take an organized tour with GettysBike Tours to understand what happened here over 150 years ago. You can also spend time riding the 26-miles of paved road in the Gettysburg National Military Park.
Grab some lunch to fuel up before heading out to Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve for an afternoon of hiking. With 10 miles of trails, you will discover wet and dry woodlands, mountain streams, ponds and a restored mineral quarry. You can check out amazing plants and wildlife – nothing ferocious though, just beautiful red-spotted newts, barred owls, pileated woodpeckers and maybe a wild turkey.
On your way back to Gettysburg, stop for dinner at the Historic Fairfield Inn. President Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, enjoyed eating at the Inn when they lived in Gettysburg. He enjoyed the chicken and biscuits; you may, too.
If you aren’t too tired from your active day, consider a ghost tour. There are many to choose from – some in town and others that take you out of town.
The next day, spend the morning walking through town. You can either take a guided tour or a self-guided tour to learn the history. Maybe you just prefer to stretch your legs by wandering in and out of the shops… a great way to explore what’s new in historic Gettysburg.
While you are exploring, you are sure to discover a variety of great local restaurants to choose from for lunch. You might want to grab a picnic lunch and head over to Gettysburg’s Rec Park. In the afternoon, take in a round of mini-golf or a quick 9 at one of our local courses. Either way, you will be sure to have a great time before heading home.
