Things to Do in Gettysburg, PA

A Gettysburg getaway is just the thing you need to add some excitement to your year. Whether you're interested in our history, agriculture, recreational activities, or the paranormal, let us help you plan your next Gettysburg vacation with a few planning tips.

You can learn about the Battle of Gettysburg and its place in American history several fun and exciting ways. Take a tour of the battlefield by Segway, scoot coupe, horseback, carriage or by bicycle. You can go by foot, in a car, on a bus or even in a hot air balloon! Let a Licensed Battlefield Guide, a CD or an iPad show you the way. Choose the method that works best for you. Explore our hands-on museums for a further understanding of the town’s history. President Eisenhower also left his mark on Gettysburg. Learn all about it at the Eisenhower National Historic Site where his Gettysburg retirement home is preserved and open for tours.

Gettysburg is known around the world for the three-day battle that took place here in 1863. But to truly understand the town, its origins and its people, you need to immerse yourself in its agricultural roots. Head out to the countryside and explore the farm markets lining the back-country roads. Bring a cooler for your tasty finds – blueberries, strawberries, peaches, asparagus, fresh milk and cheese, and apples, of course. Take a cooking class to learn how to prepare mouthwatering dishes with your local goods. Get to know the families whose roots run deep through the soil. Sample the craft beverages created from the fruits, grains and hops grown on our bountiful farmland.

From wine to cider to beer to spirits, we have something for everyone’s palate along the Adams County Pour Tour ® craft beverage trail.

Some like to be active on vacation, and others prefer to relax. Take your pick in Gettysburg. Explore our great outdoors with hikes through the battlefield, a local preserve or the nearby State Parks. If you enjoy a round of golf, you can select from several courses, all open to the public. In the winter, strap on your skis or snowboard for a mountain adventure! You will quickly discover that Gettysburg is your year-round destination of choice! You can even get your heart rate up with a ghost tour or a paranormal investigation where you can use ghost finding equipment to discover the spirits that still linger here.

If relaxation is why you’re here, we recommend taking some time to pamper yourself at one of our peaceful spas. Following your spa treatment, treat yourself to some retail therapy at our boutiques and shops downtown, or at our outlet shops with fantastic deals on name brand items. Catch a show at the local theater and indulge in some amazing comfort food. You’ll be planning your next visit before you leave town!

Today, you can step out of Gettysburg’s 1863 story and into the 20th century to learn about Ike, Mamie and their lives together in Gettysburg and beyond.
