Yes we have a famous battlefield to tour by car, bicycle, horseback, and even on foot but we boast a wealth of activities beyond those historic acres.
From historic taverns to ethnic cuisine, farm-to-table dining to unique edibles, the tastes of Gettysburg are sure to please every palate.
With adventures to suit every budget, Gettysburg and Adams County businesses offer plenty of packages to help visitors create their dream vacations.
Dawn is breaking over the horizon, the rolling hills of Adams County and beyond can be seen for miles and the town of Gettysburg is slowly stirring from its sleep. People below look up and what do they see? A hot air balloon peacefully making its way across the early morning sky.
Until this year, experiencing this unique view of Gettysburg and the surrounding countryside was a very rare opportunity, but not anymore. The U.S. Hot Air Balloon Team has set up shop at The Lodges at Gettysburg where they offer daily sunrise and sunset hot air balloon rides over the area.
The hot air balloon experience starts before passengers are even in the air. Upon arriving, passengers will be able to interact with the crew and help assemble the balloon before taking to the sky for an hour-long flight over the produce farms and orchards of Adams County, Lincoln Square and the rest of the historic downtown and the 1,300 Civil War monuments across the 6,000-acre military park.
After the flight is complete and the balloon is grounded, passengers return to the launch site where they will join the pilot and crew for a champagne toast and light snack. Flight certificates and photos are then handed out.
These hot air balloon rides join a long list of ways to tour Gettysburg and the surrounding countryside including licensed battlefield guided tours on buses, bikes and cars, self-guided, iPad, Segway, carriage and horseback tours. There’s no right way to see the battlefield, but there’s plenty of options for visitors to explore and find the right fit for them.
