Friday, July 05, 2013

Time: 7:00 pm

150th Event

Musicians from all over the world will come together and square off in an educational brass band competition beginning at 7pm.  The performance will place brother against brother as a Federal Brass Band, under the direction of Sergeant Major Kenneth J. Serfass, will play against a Confederate Brass Band, under the direction of Principal Musician Jari Villanueva.  The bands will compete back and forth with a joint performance at the conclusion of the event. The concert will take place on Steinwehr Avenue, in the grassy parcel directly across the street from the Lincoln Train Museum and Friendly's Restaurant.

Mr Nicky Hughes will moderate the back and forth jousting between two of the finest brass bands that have ever been assembled.
This truly "once in a lifetime" event is filled with authentic civil war era music played on authentic civil war era instruments by many of the most talented civil war brass musicians in the country.
A "battle of the bands" between the north, "The Federal Composite Band," led by Sergeant Major Kenneth J. Serfass from Ramona, CA, (originally from Allentown, Pa)  and the south, "The Band of The Army of Northern Virginia," directed by Principal Musician Jari Villanueva from Catonsville, MD.
There will be about 45 Civil War musicians with Civil War era instruments (1884 or older).

The event is free to the public. Bring blankets and lawn charis for an evening of period music performed on instruments that are from the 1880s or older. Conductors will share the history related to the songs performed throughout the evening. The event will conclude at dusk with Taps.
